Director Don Sharp dies at 90

Don Sharp, an Australia-born film director who was brought in to revive Hammer Films' sagging horror franchise in the mid-1960s -- and succeeded -- despite having no experience in the genre, died Dec. 14 in Cornwall, England. He was 90.Though the names most closely associated with Hammer are Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing, it was director Terence Fisher who shaped the Gothic horror films that starred those actors. Fisher had directed films like "Horror of Dracula" and "The Revenge of Frankenstein" in the late 1950s, but the company lost its confidence in the helmer when his 1962 entry "The Phantom of the Opera," later considered a cult classic, failed both at the box office and with critics.Sharp had done his first directing work on children's shows; had directed family films "The Stolen Airliner" and "The Adventures of Hal 5" and the first English rock 'n roll movie, "The Golden Disc"; had written the screenplays for several movies; and had even acted in a few. When he came aboard at Hammer, he was assigned first to "The Kiss of the Vampire." Sharp, who had recently done some work in British television, hired TV actors, and despite the fact that Lee and Cushing were nowhere to be found, the inexpensive but stylish film was a B.O. winner and a favorite to this day. Memorably grandiose scenes included a sequence depicting a sumptuous ball. For Hammer, Sharp also directed "The Devil-Ship Pirates" and "Rasputin: The Mad Monk," the latter with Lee; for other companies, he made several films similar to his Hammer efforts: "Witchcraft," with Lon Chaney Jr., and "The Face of Fu Manchu" and "The Brides of Fu Manchu," both with Lee.Sharp directed several episodes of classic British spy series "The Avengers" in the late 1960s and later directed thrillers including "Callan," a bigscreen adaptation of the noted British series starring Edward Woodward; "Hennessy," starring Rod Steiger and Lee Remick; a 1978 remake of "The Thirty-Nine Steps"; and the 1979 Alistair MacLean adaptation "Bear Island," starring Donald Sutherland, Vanessa Redgrave, Richard Widmark and Lee.In the 1980s he made the film "What Waits Below" but worked mostly in TV, directed the miniseries "A Woman of Substance," based on a novel by Barbara Taylor Bradford.Donald Herman Sharp was born in Tasmania and served in the Australian Air Force beginning in 1941. After the war, he performed onstage and on radio and then moved to England in 1949. Contact Variety Staff at news@variety.com

CBS rolls to weekly ratings victory

Freshman powerhouse 2 Broke Girls performed impressively for CBS when it anchored Monday for the first time. The finale of "Survivor," original episodes of most of its hit shows and a sizable NFL overrun on Sunday lifted CBS to one of the most dominant ratings victories of the season. With many of the top shows on the competition preempted or airing in repeat, the Eye claimed seven of the week's top 10 programs in adults 18-49 -- as well as the top five scripted skeins. CBS wraps fall tied with Fox for the lead among adults 18-49 while holding comfortable leads in its strongest categories -- adults 25-54 and total viewers. While CBS is up slightly across the board, Fox is the only net to improve by double-digit percentages. Looking at the week of Dec. 12-18, Nielsen estimates that CBS averaged a 2.8 rating/8 share in adults 18-49 during primetime, comfortably ahead of NBC (2.0/6) and Fox (1.9/5), with ABC and Univision (both 1.3/4) well behind. CBS also cruised in adults 25-54 (3.8/9 to 2.5/6 for runner-up NBC) and total viewers, where its 11.4 million was nearly as much as the next two nets combined (6.2 million for NBC, 5.6 million for Fox). Highlights for CBS included "2 Broke Girls" (4.2/11 in 18-49, 12.50m), which still performed very well despite airing a half-hour earlier than usual (in place of "How I Met Your Mother"). The net also won in the 9 o'clock hour with "Two and a Half Men" (4.7/11, 14.88m) and "Mike and Molly" (4.0/9, 12.77m). "NCIS" (3.6/10, 19.13m), "Criminal Minds" (3.4/9, 12.88m) and "Person of Interest" (2.8/8, 12.93m) were among the Eye's timeslot-winning dramas, with the last drawing its largest audience since its premiere. And Sunday, following a hugely rated NFL game, "60 Minutes" surged (4.0/11, 18.47m), and "Survivor" (4.0/10, 13.07m) wrapped on par with the show's spring conclusion and down a bit vs. last year's fall finale. NBC was paced by "Sunday Night Football" (6.1/15, 16.58m), though the Baltimore-San Diego match was one of the franchise's least-watched of the season. The net also was boosted by the return of "Fear Factor" (3.5/8, 8.52m), which significantly improved its Monday timeslot and became the net's second strongest entertainment series telecast of the fall in 18-49. Fox was led by Wednesday's episode of "The X Factor" (3.4/10, 10.79m), though the new comedy that followed it, "I Hate My Teenage Daughter" (1.8/5, 5.06m), took a hit in its second week. Net fared better with its Tuesday rookie comedy "New Girl" (3.3/9, 6.82m), again building on its demo lead-in from "Glee" (3.0/8, 7.13m). And ABC, which didn't air any original scripted programs, had a very quiet week, seeing its best numbers from Wednesday spec "Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2011" (2.3/6, 8.39m), though the annual event continues to see its popularity wane. ESPN's "Monday Night Football" was below average (3.7/10 in 18-49, 9.88m for St. Louis-Seattle) but was easily the top cable draw of the week. Top entertainment series among young adults were A&E's "Storage Wars" (2.3/6, 5.20m) and "Storage Wars: Texas" (2.1/6, 4.68m), Discovery's "Gold Rush" (2.1/7, 5.38m), History's "Pawn Stars" (2.1/6, 5.23m) and MTV's "Teen Mom" (2.0/5, 3.42m). Other than "MNF," the most-watched cablecast of the week was Fox News Channel's coverage of the Republican Presidential Debate on Thursday (6.71 million). It drew more viewers than ABC News' "The Year With Katie Couric" special that aired on the same night (5.54m). And on the pay cable side, Showtime was pleased with the numbers for its Sunday finales of "Dexter" (2.23 million) and "Homeland" (1.71m). When you add in a second showing that night, "Homeland's" audience (2.1 million) was the largest to date for the first-season finale of a Showtime series (Daily Variety, Dec. 20). Real-Life Rudy Accused of Screwing Investors Out of $11 Million

It’s a sad day for fans of the inspiring sports classic Rudy. Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger, perhaps the most famous collegiate football underdog of all time — on whom the title character in David Anspaugh’s 1993 film was based — has been charged by the SEC for a pump-and-dump scheme that earned him over $10 million in profits for a Rudy-branded sports drink. According to a press release from the SEC (via The Observer): The Securities and Exchange Commission today charged Daniel Ruettiger and 12 other participants in a scheme to deceive investors into buying stock in his sports drink company. Ruettiger is widely known for having inspired the 1993 motion picture “Rudy.” According to the SEC’s complaint filed in federal court in Las Vegas, Ruettiger founded Rudy Nutrition to compete with Gatorade in the sports drink market. Rudy Nutrition produced and sold modest amounts of a sports drink called “Rudy” with the tagline “Dream Big! Never Quit!” However, the company primarily served as a vehicle for a pump-and-dump scheme that occurred in 2008 and generated more than $11 million in illicit profits. Movie Rudy, as played by Sean Astin, would have never approved of this. For an extensive write-up of the Rudy case, see Foster Kamer’s brilliant report, which features Ruettiger as the Financial Criminal of the Day. 'Jack The Giant Killer' Trailer Rises The Beanstalk

Hollywood loves its remakes, and favorite anecdotes would be the simplest money of. What child or adult in the usa is not acquainted with the storyline of Jack and also the beanstalk, even when they are not obvious around the specifics? On the other hand, the specifics could be largely invented according to whatever tired parent is telling the storyline to his kid: you will find some beans, a beanstalk, some titans along with a guy named Jack who fights them or attempts to, a minimum of. In connection with this, "Jack the Giant Killer" looks wholly familiar. A clip opens with Nicholas Hoult because the titular Jack, palming a fistful of miracle beans while a significant guy informs him to become careful. Well, you are aware how it is going: the beans fall in certain soil and water, then skyrocket up 1000's of ft in to the sky, transporting Jack's house and also the princess from the realm by using it. To win her back, Jack must climb in to the air and navigate the field of the titans without getting squashed. Three . 5 (Seh-o-nim)

An Iranian Independents production. (Worldwide sales: Iranian Independents, Tehran.) Created by Mohammad-Reza Sharafodin, Seyed Amir Seyedzadeh. Directed, compiled by Naghi Nemati. With: Samaneh Vafaiezadeh, Shooka Karimi, Negar Hassanzadeh, Mehdi Poormoosa.Naghi Nemati's "Three . 5Inch begins off in an instant -- in other words, three bangs along with a troubled lady having a gun running a condo. It grabs the interest, that the pic still does despite moments when its narration and editing feel inadvertently confusing. The helmer ("Individuals Three") keeps interest high is really a credit to his intriguing figures and also the three terrific stars playing vigorously independent-minded criminals on leave, waiting to become smuggled from the country. Pic's subterranean yet professional feel and naturally critical undertake Iran most likely preclude home play, yet fests happen to be welcoming. The first blast happens inside a expensive-forward which the rest of the film works toward. The shooter is Hanieh (Samaneh Vafaiezadeh), the earliest and many mature of three buddies in contact with smugglers close to the Azerbaijan border. Another two, Banafsheh (Shooka Karimi) and Homa (Negar Hassanzadeh), are strong-willed and abrasive Homa's swagger would not be unnatural around the roads of NY. The 3 take presctiption a brief furlough from prison, determined not to return. Everything doesn't go as planned. Hanieh privately cancels their appointment using the human traffickers, though this part remains unclear plus they have a conference with Nader (Mehdi Poormoosa) close to the frontier. The crossing is postponed when a few of the smugglers get caught, and additional complications arise when Hanieh unwillingly discloses she's pregnant. Production notes say she discovers she's Aids-positive too, though this detail is not apparent within the film. This narrative confusion regrettably infects a great deal from the plot, and you will find occasions when audiences may question if you will find temporal changes (aside from the very first scene, you will find not). Hanieh looks like it's a physician and also the other two are mediterranean students, though this might be a smokescreen for his or her jailbird status the point is, the reason behind their jail time isn't revealed. Without initial shooting, Nemati conveys an understated feeling of impending disaster that does much to help keep viewer attention taut. Pic unquestionably goes towards the new school of Iranian cinema, one which eschews metaphors or simple tales and rather falls in to the nitty-gritty of the society precariously at odds with itself. Duplicity, aggression and callous envy would be the key points of the world, which accumulates around the most nihilistic aspects of classic noir and refracts them with the particularly unyielding turmoil from the Iranian condition. "Three . 5Inch consists of all this, and even when the plot is not always obvious, the critique is unshakable. The 3 leads, all unknown to Western auds, are equally strong, from Vafaiezadeh's preoccupied distress to Karimi and Hassanzadeh's hard-edged cockiness. When the government bodies allow them to, this trio is going far within the thesping world. Handheld lensing is consistent with the pic's indie character.Camera (color, HD), Roozbeh Rayga editors, Mahmoud Ghafari, Nemati production designer, Nemati seem, Hassan Shabankareh, Pooya Payvar. Scott FeinbergCeline Buckens and Jeremy Irvine Steven Spielberg's epic adaptation from the novel and Broadway play War Equine had its world premiere Sunday evening at Lincoln subsequently Center's Avery Hall, just ft where the theatrical production is ongoing its blockbuster run. Spielberg was available prior to the film introducing the huge most of the film's large ensemble, such as the film's three large up-and-comers, 21-year-old Englishman Jeremy Irvine, 21-year-old German David Kross and 15-year-old Frenchwoman Celine Buckens, in addition to veterans David Thewlis (who also stars within the Lady) and Emily Watson (who had been two times nominated for top actress Oscar within the the nineteen nineties). The most typical responses (spoiler alert): Several moments from the film -- like other Spielberg films which involve war, including and particularly Schindler's List (1993) and Saving Private Ryan (1998) -- are extremely disturbing that some audiences needed to close this article, particularly the scene where the equine becomes entangled in barbed wire while running through no-guy's land (producer Kathleen Kennedy explained throughout a Q&A which i moderated on Saturday with most of the film's below-the-line contributing factors that it hadn't been actual wire, the equine never was vulnerable to injuries, as well as an animal-privileges repetition was always on set). Several moments from the film -- like other Spielberg films that conspicuously feature children, including E.T. (1982) -- are psychologically effective enough to maneuver the gruffest of males to tears, specially the scene where a temporarily-blinded Albert is reunited with Joey, along with the film's final scene by which Albert and Joey go back to Albert's family farm following the war and Albert is accepted by his parents. (Spielberg may be the master at yanking in the heartstrings, and something of his trademark styles is parents and kids growing to simply accept each other.) PHOTOS: Steven Spielberg on Set A few of the acting is a little stilted -- Irvine, making his giant screen debut, is a little stiff Buckens, though lovely, includes a scene having a single tear that's a little much and also the youthful actor who plays Albert's friend and states on several occasions "Well, give you credit,Inch is greater than a little grating. Hollywood hard-wired for hype and hoopla

If you have been strange tribal traditions at this time around around of the season. One annual tradition might be the content with the annoyed media member who wags a finger at honours campaigns, shocked, shocked in the concept individuals are trying to purchase an award. I buy it. Some find campaigning distasteful -- scientists don't take out ads inside the Colonial Journal of medication, promoting "for that consideration in many groups" for your Nobel Prize. However, showbiz ain't medicine. Am I meant for campaigning? Clearly! Am I being impartial? Definitely not! A number of Variety's earnings arises from these campaigns.Just one can act as objective. Marketing is an element of Hollywood's DNA. Fox didn't launch "Avatar" quietly, saying, "Gee, I am hoping people realize the film is opening now.Inch They promoted the hell from this, but got results. Selling is an element of every single film, TV series, album, vidgame or online project. It's the Hollywood way which is the American way. Do not take my word with this. This really is really the description in a single of the most popular authors on the whole process of selecting Academy awards: "Technically, they are selected, however , they are not made a decision through whatever artistic and critical understanding Hollywood could affect possess. They are ballyhooed, pressed, screamed, screamed, too as with every way propagandized to the awareness in the voters so continuously, inside the days just before the ultimate balloting, that everything except the golden aura in the box office is forgotten."That essay, referred to as "Oscar Evening in Hollywood," was put together by Raymond Chandler in 1950 for your British film magazine Sight and Appear. Yes, 61 in the past campaigning and many types of the lamenting about crassness are as old as Oscar itself. Campaigns have two goals: to goad voters into going to a movie to be able to help help remind them why they loved it. AMPAS people don't have time to see every movie, and campaigns basically say, "Ensure the truth is this film prior to deciding to election." Special tests, trade ads and screeners happen to be around for age groups. So gets the meet-and-greet-the-competitors technique, nevertheless it has greatly elevated formerly few years. It'll be interesting to determine if campaigns change over the following few years, because couple of years ago, Mo'nique and Christoph Waltz underlined the reality that might be no rules.Mo'nique was working, and her absence round the kudos circuit increased to become host to pride: I'm not going to woo voters, permit them to election on merit. And he or she won!Waltz was around, but he didn't give anybody-to-one interviews. Which he won!In contrast, the "Hurt Locker" team that year, as well as the "King's Speech" team a year ago, were fixtures round the honours circuit. And so they won! Campaign strategists watch each other and imitate success, as well as the non-appearance of individuals individuals who win defied the typical understanding. Did the hands-shaking really really make a difference? I don't believe Tom Hooper won because he's intelligent and enjoyable (though he's both). For me people selected for him given that they loved his work. About 10 years ago, campaigners got the same mixed message: "The Pianist's" Adrien Brody was everywhere, which he won. Director Roman Polanski was nowhere to look, which he won. Why bother campaigning? Strategists desire to show they're investing a lot time regarding their clients. Clients see rivals investing a lot some time and think, "Uh-oh, I better do that too." And, most significantly, nobody desires to take risks. The PricewaterhouseCoopers people are resolutely mother about past Oscar results. But Ernst & Youthful partner Andy Purchase last August confirmed for the L.A. Occasions that in many major Emmy groups formerly 10 years that "it's been one ballot" that determined the individuals who win.The lesson from your civics class was true: Each election matters. So competitors, strategists, professionals and agents use every technique possible searching for that elusive single election making the primary difference.Am I scripting this column to drum up ads? No, honours budgets were set a really very long time ago, which isn't prone to change that. Will I wish to safeguard the Academy together with other honours groups? No, they're doing fine without me. However bristle within the "you can buy an award" articles because I resent the thought of "people Hollywood heathens have been in it again!" Each day I am surprised about the venality and stupidity of some showbiz people. And every day I am impressed having a couple of folks' intelligence, sensitivity and kindness. Basically, show folk are human, not sub-human.But a few things i really resent is people accepting the typical understanding. In the event you say something frequently enough, people need it fact, as well as the usual cliches -- "it's just a recognition contest" and "he simply bought his award" -- are actually repeated frequently, many individuals accept it. Too for lazy media people, it's a saucier story than: "Honours voters election utilizing their conscience!"In my opinion most voters are sincere. I don't believe that, inside the good status for honours, anybody ever mentioned, "I didn't such as this film, however love the ads as well as the party was great, and so i am prone to election with this.Inch Do not request me, request Raymond Chandler.Because 1950 essay, he involves an amazing conclusion: "All this is great democracy from the sort. We elect Congressmen and Presidents in the identical, filter systems stars, cameramen, authors, and many types of the comfort of individuals who've associated with your building of images? Once we permit noise, bally-hoo, and bad theater to influence us in selecting a individuals who're to use the country, how come we resist the identical approaches to selecting a meritorious achievement inside the film business?"Strangely enough, in just about any political election, bloggers will lament a bad tone in the campaigning or perhaps the amounts spent, but handful of really question whether it's appropriate to campaign. So let me discover basically have this straight: It's OK to campaign for your presidency in the U.S., but Oscar ought to be held with a greater standard? So, my greatly beloved entertainment-journalist co-employees: Keep in mind you'll most likely often hear something plenty of occasions, but that doesn't mean the simple truth is. And, incidentally, I'm told that people do campaign for Nobel Honours, frequently much more shamelessly in comparison to film biz. That's reassuring, I guess. Contact Timothy M.
